MY FITNESS ROUTINE

Since the beginning of the year, I've been getting myself into a fitness routine; I work out at least three times a week (either back to back or on alternating days) and for a minimum of 20 minutes each day. I often get funny looks when I tell people that I exercise, but even though I have a slender physique right now, this does not automatically count me amongst the most healthy people. Exercising is not just about loosing weight but its also about keeping a fit, active and healthy lifestyle. I especially want to keep fit because I don't want to just let myself go now that I'm married, I'd love to maintain my physique for as long as I possibly can, and there's also the prospect of children. Of course I expect to gain some weight when I'm pregnant but I hope that after child birth I can work myself back into my fitness routine. Fingers crossed, that all goes according to plan!

I don't attend a gym because I find it much more convenient to exercise in the comfort of my own space at home. So, my workout routine is a combination of routines I have picked up from watching exercise videos on YouTube. 

Top Four Reasons Why I Exercise 

1. Obviously, it helps me to burn fat in places I'd not like to see any fat (i.e. my stomach and my thighs). I'm blessed to have a really fast metabolism (partly because I take forever to finish my meals), so combined with regular exercise I'm able to target fat I don't want and get my body firm and toned.

2. I don't just want a hot summer body, I want a hot all year round body! Lol, ambitious, I know! But I do want to look good in a swimsuit or bikini when I'm on holiday, and like I said before, I genuinely want to maintain my physique for as long as I can.

3. Exercising is such a confidence booster! One thing I have come to realise since I've started exercising regularly is that not only do I feel excellent and really positive after a good workout, but it also gives me so much energy. I know a lot of people who tend to exercise first thing in the morning to help them get their day started on a high. For me, I tend to work out in the evenings and I find that I become really active afterwards and I'm able to get a lot done.

4. It's good for the heart! This is probably my most important point because exercise should be for everybody, whether you're 16 or 60, because regular physical activity and exercise reduces the risk of a number of health conditions and diseases including high blood pressure and heart disease. This link to the NHS (National Health Service) offers a series of physical activity guidelines fora range of age groups (from early childhood to over 65s).

My Workout Routine

I start off with a warm up and stretching exercises including a quad stretch, cobra stretch and hip stretch. These stretching exercises ease me into my workout and relax my muscles for what's about to come!

Then I proceed to do 30-60 second of each of the following to target my abs and muffin top:

  • Leg drops
  • Flutter kicks
  • Scissors kicks
  • Reverse crunch
  • Heel touches
  • Mountain climbers
  • V-Crunches
  • Russian twist (with or without weights)
  • Planking 
  • Side planks (right and left side)

For my thighs I do 30-60 seconds of each of the following:

  • Squats (including plie squats / with or without weights)
  • Squat and kick (with or without weights)
  • Inner leg lifts
  • Outer leg lifts
  • Leg circles
  • Fire Hydrants

Eat Right

None of the above will actually work effectively unless I eat right. Being a Nigerian, the majority of my diet consists of carbs, and a carb heavy diet is not great for maintaining a toned physique. So, over the past couple of weeks I've changed my diet slightly by reducing my carb intake and increasing my veggie consumption. I don't follow any particular healthy diet recipes but I've been substituting rice for salads and meat for grilled or stewed fish. I tend to have oats for breakfast, which gives me a lot of energy in the morning and can carry me through the first half of the day without me feeling super hungry. I've also been drinking a lot more water which has great benefits for your skin. My diet change makes me feel a lot lighter and healthier.

  1. I am trying to lose some weight so I have started exercising. I follow the Jillian Michaels 30 day shred. I have also changed my diet. No rice, no bread. I am trying to eat some good carbs - cous cous, sweet potato, beans and lots of veggies. Hoping I have a summer bod all year round.
